Midterm Mania
Posted on March 8, 2010Midterms are looming and students everywhere are buckling down. In the midst of all the study sessions, sleep deprivation, and skyrocketing stress, all I can think about is… spring break. I’m feeling frazzled and the last thing on my mind is needing to know the difference between xylem and phloem. So instead of studying, maybe I’ll wait and just cram just a few hours before an exam.
Yet when I think about it, how many times has this happened and I ended up with a less than satisfactory grade? Here are some great tips I found for stress management and successful studying:
1. Clear out your schedule: Studying requires time. If you can, try to eliminate other time responsibilities. If it’s possible, schedule time off from work or ask for fewer hours. Your friends and social events can wait a week. Definitely avoid shopping.
2. Get off Facebook/Hulu/YouTube. ‘Nuff said.
3. Feeling overwhelmed? Go for a brisk walk—or even better, a run. Exercise releases endorphins that minimize stress levels. You should schedule in breaks in order to recharge your batteries.
4. Sleep: Heavy exam times like midterms are notorious for all-nighters. However, does suffering through the wee hours of the night help you be alert the next morning? If you’re bleary-eyed and draggy-tailed, it may not bode well for a good grade.
